Stay Alert

Innate among all dads should be the role to protect

Isn't it curious how some stories just stick with you..

Maybe its a saying or a phrase that resonated with you at a certain point in time or maybe a fact you remembered hearing years back. In any case, I believe there is a reason that something stuck with you.

I attended a non denominational christian university in southern California. During one of the required bible courses, I learned about a story in the book of Judges that has always stuck with me ever since.

Gideons 300

Basically God uses an average, everyday dude named Gideon to command his massive army. Gideon, armed with 60,000 soldiers came upon an enemy army camp in a valley. Gideon vastly outnumbered his opponent but God wanted to test both Gideon and his men.

God told Gideon to send those soldiers who didn’t want to be there home. Still, there were too many. Later, God had Gideon take the remaining soldiers to a watering hole where he watched each of his men take from the water..those who drank directly from the water with their mouths were told to go home. Those who cupped the water, bringing it to their lips were told to stay.

This test was used to select only the best soldiers who never let their guard down, even when they felt safe. By bringing the water to them they were able to stay alert and use their eyes, not leaving their backs exposed. In the end 300 remained. Those 300 went on to crush the enemy army camp.

TAKEAWAYS

Be Familiar with your Surroundings

Or at least act like it. Move with a purpose when in unfamiliar places where you might be vulnerable or traveling. If you find yourself lost or flustered, find a coffee shop where you can sit down and take a deep breath and get your bearings. Its easy to go from bad to worse when you are frantic.. stay calm, reassure the fam its all good and come up with a plan.

Trust Your Gut

If you ever find yourself in a situation you feel is unsafe calmly remove yourself without causing too much of a panic.. Your kids will feed off you so try not to let them get freaked out if they don’t have to.

Keep your distance

Don’t feel bad keeping your fam close by, all to yourself; if you feel someone is invading personal space step in right away. If you feel like being cordial hit em with the “oh he’s recovering from a cold, don’t want to get you sick”. Use your discernment when it comes to this.. It’s also ok to be stern and straight up ask them to step away.

Sit Facing the Door

I like to scan the room to both check out the aesthetics and decor and get a feel for space. When (Ali) finds a spot (we) like I will usually grab the seat facing the door. This is something I have always done out of habit. I can see whats going on in my peripheral and who’s walking through the doors.

Don’t Drink too Much

This one is a no brainer especially when you’re with your family. FACT..when you drink too much you’re much Save it for a night with the boys, its not fair to your wife or children.

Know How to Protect Your Family

Getting physical is never a good option but if someone attacks you be able to protect yourself..keep your hands up..use those long legs to kick to keep your distance. Hit the YouTube to keep a few moves in your pocket.

It's especially important to do so when you might be vulnerable.. after a long night, in the parking lot, busy intersection, out in the country, when traveling somewhere new.. use this as a reminder to keep what is most important to you safe.

I don't know about you.. but I want to live my life like one of God's chosen 300.
